Symptoms

  • Acute Infection: In acute cases, cattle may show fever, often reaching up to 40 - 42°C (104 - 107.6°F). They usually experience loss of appetite, leading to weight loss. Severe diarrhea is common, with the feces being watery and sometimes containing mucus or blood. Nasal discharge, coughing, and other respiratory symptoms can also be present, similar to those of a common cold or flu in humans.

  • Chronic Infection: Cattle with chronic BVDV infection often have poor growth rates, especially in young calves. They may experience recurrent diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and weakness over time. Reproductive problems are also prevalent, such as infertility, abortions, stillbirths, or the birth of weak calves.

Clinical Applications

  • Herd Screening: Regularly screen cattle herds using BVDV nucleic acid detection reagents. This is crucial for early detection of the virus in asymptomatic carriers. For example, in large - scale dairy farms, samples can be collected from milk, blood, or ear notch tissue at regular intervals (e.g., quarterly) to check for the presence of BVDV.

  • Quarantine of Newly - Introduced Cattle: Before introducing new cattle into a herd, test them with the detection reagent. This helps prevent the introduction of BVDV - infected animals into a healthy herd. In cattle trading, both the seller and the buyer can use this test to ensure the health status of the cattle being sold or purchased.

  • Diagnosis of Sick Cattle: When cattle show symptoms such as diarrhea, respiratory problems, or reproductive disorders, use the BVDV nucleic acid detection reagent to quickly determine if BVDV is the causative agent. This allows for timely implementation of appropriate treatment and control measures, such as isolation of infected animals, improving hygiene conditions, and providing supportive care.
