Microsporum spp. is a genus of dermatophytic fungi that primarily infects the hair and skin of humans and animals, causing common superficial mycoses like tinea capitis and tinea corporis, and is characterized by the production of large, multicellular macroconidia.

Microsporum canis is a specific pathogenic species within the Microsporum genus, mainly using dogs as its primary reservoir, and it is a common zoonotic dermatophyte that causes tinea (e.g., ringworm) in humans—especially children—often presenting with fluorescent hair shafts under Wood's lamp.

Trichophyton spp. is a diverse genus of dermatophytes that predominantly infects humans (with some species affecting animals), invading the skin, hair, and nails to cause widespread mycoses such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), hand ringworm (tinea manuum), and onychomycosis, typically producing abundant microconidia.

Clinical Application:

Rapid & Accurate Diagnosis: Compared to conventional methods (e.g., microscopy and culture, which take up to several weeks), this PCR kit shortens the turnaround time to hours, enabling early diagnosis of suspected dermatophytosis (such as onychomycosis, tinea corporis, tinea capitis) and prompt differentiation of dermatophyte infections from other similar skin conditions.
Improved Sensitivity & Specificity: It is more sensitive than traditional microscopy and culture, capable of detecting cases missed by conventional approaches (e.g., culture-negative but PCR-positive specimens), thus reducing false negatives. Meanwhile, it maintains high specificity to accurately distinguish among different dermatophyte species, minimizing misdiagnosis.
Species Identification & Therapeutic Guidance: The kit can identify dermatophytes at the species or species-complex level (e.g., Trichophyton rubrum). Given that different dermatophyte species may respond differently to antifungal therapies, precise species identification helps clinicians select more targeted antifungal drugs to optimize treatment regimens. Additionally, it can detect drug resistance-related genes or mutation sites, providing guidance for treating drug-resistant strains.
